In one of my project for the wastage collection of a city(Bikaner), awarded by Nagar Nigam to our firm, the objective was to run 60 tractors and manage about 250 people. After successfully running it for one year we again were awarded the contract but during that our worker demanded a hike in their daily wages which was not at an acceptable level. I didn’t agree to it and, they went on a protest and stopped doing the work, and we were facing a penalty of Rs.50,000 a day for not doing it. The garbage was stacking up in the city, and the pressure was coming from the local authority to resolve the issue as early as possible. So in this situation either I have to accept their demand or face the penalty. It was a situation in which we were facing losses every day from all the possible alternative in front of us. I, as a resource manager, was facing a difficult time in dealing with all of these challenges.
Then to overcome this challenge, I have to think out of the box. So we advertised in the newspaper that the new vacancy is available for workers. After which the few earlier worker got afraid and tried to negotiate with us but, now I have an alternative, which I wanted to utilize more. So hired some new workers and some old one to destroy their unity. The other workers protested more so; we have to take support from the local authority, police to keep the work going on. After all this event that continued for approximately two months, we were able to get back on track and started earning the profit. So for me, this was the instance from my life where I felt I came out successful against all the odds.
